Designing in Context: Preservation in Practice explores the work required to preserve, interpret, and create access to a cultural archive of extraordinary scale.

Anchored by the Johnson Publishing Company Archives, the program considers both the creative history held within the collection and the disciplines involved in its next chapter, from photography, graphic and editorial design, and publishing to conservation, digitization, architecture, and the development of a new research environment in Washington.

Through a presentation, conversation, and audience Q&A, the evening looks at how archival material is conserved, interpreted, organized, and made accessible, and what deeper engagement with historical material can offer designers and creative practitioners today.
